Seed stitch might be nice. A garter scarf would work well too though!
lolly beat me to it! seed stitch is good... i made a scarf for my dad that was a combination of seed stitch and ribbingi bet that cables would work in a small gauge, depending on if you want a mindless or a challenging knit!
