The pullout on this piece from cnn.com is patently ridiculous. "Borne of the 1950s and 60s"?Spoken word as art is as old as speech. People have been telling stories to each other forever.
Beowulf was a little thing called an epic poem, and as such spoken aloud.
Implying that the spoke word didn't become art until the 20th century implies that there was no culture or art until man could write.
How utterly ignorant. Re-popularized would have been more accurate.
